Trying not to get TOO technical, but you have to be careful with your vintage receiver. I think I've grown bored with them and would like something that sounds just a bit more lively or detailed, if that makes sense.
They were given to me by my mom's ex-boyfriend back in 1990, and while they're nothing special, they do have a nice mid-range and a pleasantly full sound, but are fairly flat sounding overall.
There's no brand/model info anywhere on them. My knowledge of speakers and current speaker options is annoyingly limited, so any helpful tips or advice is appreciated.īackground info: For the last ~30 years I've been using these old late-70s-era floorstanding three-way speakers that I actually know nearly nothing about. I've been eyeing speakers by Wharfedale and Polk, but I wonder if there's anything else I should be considering? Good overall tonal balance is important, but I do really appreciate a healthy mid-range. We're in an apartment, so something that doesn't have to be cranked to enjoy would obviously be preferable. While these old receivers seem to put out more power than their rating, I still suspect I'll need something that's not too power hungry. I'd be pairing them with a Marantz 2235B (35 watts), but I sometimes switch it out with my Yamaha CR-620 (also 35 watts).
I'm open to either floorstanding or bookshelf.
There's one caveat, however: I have a hard $1,000 budget, which I'm well aware is going to limit options, but that is the reality right now. I'm long overdue for a new pair of speakers and I'm a bit overwhelmed with the range of choices out there.
